Trek Tanzania's Legendary Peaks

IMG_4690.JPG

3 Days 2 Nights Trekking

Mount Oldoinyo Lengai—the "Mountain of God"—is the world's only active volcano that erupts cool, black natrocarbonatite lava, which turns white when it rains. A night climb is required to beat the intense daytime heat, culminating in a spectacular sunrise over the Great Rift Valley and Lake Natron. From its summit, you can take in panoramic views of the Rift Valley, Lake Natron, Mount Kilimanjaro, and Mount Meru.

Day 0

Day 0 – Pre-trek Briefing

If you have opted for optional airport transfers, we will pick you up from Kilimanjaro or Arusha Airport and transfer you to your hotel in Arusha. You should plan to arrive at least one day before the trek starts. Today includes a pre-trek briefing, where we review your equipment, discuss the climb, and arrange any rental gear from a local shop. Overnight at your Arusha hotel.

Day 01

Arusha to Lake Natron

After an early breakfast, you'll drive from Arusha to the Lake Natron area. The journey, which takes roughly 6–7 hours, passes through the dramatic Great Rift Valley and remote Maasai villages. Upon arrival in the afternoon, you will settle into your camp near the lake before embarking on a guided walk to the nearby Ngare Sero Waterfalls, where you can take a refreshing dip. Later, you'll visit the shores of Lake Natron, famous for its large flocks of flamingos. Overnight at a camp near Lake Natron. Meals: Lunch & dinner

Day 02

Lake Natron – Midnight Hike to Summit

After a day of rest and final preparations, you will begin the ascent around midnight. Climbing under the stars with a headlamp, you'll tackle the steep, ash-covered slopes for about 4–7 hours to reach the summit rim (2,878-3,188m / 9,440-10,459 ft). You'll arrive just in time for a spectacular sunrise over the crater and the surrounding Rift Valley. After taking in the views, you'll descend, a process that takes roughly  3–6 hours. Overnight at a camp near Lake Natron. Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner

Day 03

Descend & Return to Arusha

After breakfast and a well-deserved rest, you will begin the scenic drive back to Arusha, which takes about 6–7 hours. You will have a chance to stop for a Maasai village visit en route, arriving in Arusha in the late afternoon or early evening. Meals: Breakfast & lunch
